How to Troubleshoot Your Garage Door Opener

Garage DoorMost of the time, a garage door opener works so beautifully it’s easy to take it for granted. With the press of a button, a several hundred pound object opens with ease, inviting you into your garage and the sanctuary of your home. But when a garage door opener suddenly doesn’t work, it can seem like the end of the world. Suddenly you’re dodging raindrops and having to lift it manually, if you can get it open at all. But fortunately most repairs for garage door openers are fairly simple. (In fact 90% of the time, a fresh pair of batteries solve the issue.) Here’s how to troubleshoot your garage door opener so it’s working perfectly again.

Neither Remote nor Wall Switch Work?

If the garage door won’t open with the remote or the wall switch, chances are you’ve got an electrical problem. Check to see if the unit is unplugged. Next, check if a fuse was blown. It’s also possible your garage door opener motor has burned out. You’ll need to call a professional installer to replace it.

Remote Not Work?

It’s possible your remote is out of range. Move the antenna closer to the front of the garage. Also make sure the antenna is hanging downward and isn’t damaged. The problem may be as simple as a dead battery in the remote that needs replaced.

Garage Door Won’t Close

If your garage door doesn’t close, you might need to readjust your sensor. Electronic eyes are located near the bottom of the door and require a clear line of sight between them. Make sure nothing’s blocking this line and that both are opposite each other. You might also need to tighten down the brackets holding the sensors.
