How to Fix a Garage Door That’s Jumped the track

A garage door can go off track for any number of reasons — tracks that aren’t straight, a broken cable, or an obstruction on the track.

What’s clear is you should immediately stop using the garage door. Continuing to do so can cause seriously expensive damage to both the garage door and your track.

Stay home. Call an Uber. Have a friend take you to work. Don’t try to force the door.

How to Repair a Garage Door Off Track

Depending on how badly off track your garage door is as well as your handiness with tools, you may be able to repair it yourself. If you don’t feel confident of the job, however, it’s always best to call a professional.

First, disconnect the garage door opener by pulling on the cord hanging from the opener. This will release the door.

Next, locate the jamming wheels. Put a stop on the garage door with locking pliers.

Get hold of the outer edge of the track with a pair of pliers and pull it. This gives you room to put the wheels back on the track.

Once the wheels are back in position, knock the track with the rubber mallet back to it’s right position. This should put the door back on track.

Finally, test the garage door. Hopefully, everything works smoothly. Once you’ve confirmed everything is working properly, test the garage door opener. It should reconnect with the garage door again, good as new.
