Every once in a while, you need to reprogram your garage door opener, especially following a power outage if your garage door opener isn’t already installed with battery backup (more on that later). Or you might need to program your garage door opener if you’ve had a new one installed. We’ll walk you through this fairly simple garage door repair.
First, locate the “learn” button on the power box connected to your garage door opener. You’ll need a ladder to get a closer look.
On your power box, you’ll find a panel that drops down. This will give you access to the light bulb, the wires, and the “learn” button. Push the learn button until you see a small light next to the button come on.
Next, press the main button on your garage door opener remote. If the light of your garage door opener works, you did it right. Close the power box and test the remote again.
How to Program the Keypad to Your Garage Door Opener
You program the keypad essentially the same way as you program the remote to your garage door opener. Press the learn button. Go to the keypad and put in your new code. Press enter. If the garage door opener light blinks, you’re good to go. Closer the power box and test out your new code in the keypad.
Time to Install Battery Backup on Your Garage Door Opener?
If you are reprogramming your garage door opener because of a power outage, then chances are you don’t have battery backup for your garage door opener.
Installing battery backup for your garage door opener is a good idea. (It’s actually a requirement for any new garage doors or garage door openers installed after 2019 in California.) But even outside of California’s requirements, the convenience alone is worth it. This way, you won’t lose access to your garage door opener during a major storm.
We offer battery backup installation kits to customers in Rancho Cordova. Give us a call and we’d be happy to install battery backup!
