If you use your garage door every day like most people, it can become unbalanced, causing it to lean on a certain side. An unbalanced door might not close all the way on one side. If this is the case, the door will need rebalanced so that both sides raise and lower evenly.
To balance a garage door, start by disconnecting the garage door opener. This can be done by pulling down on the red cord that hangs overhead.
Next, raise the door up slightly and see if it hangs from one side or another. If it leans, you’re door will need to be rebalanced.
Place c-clamps on the track of the door so the door will not raise while you are adjusting the tension.
Balancing the Door
Stand on a ladder and adjust the tension of the spring with a wrench and a winding bar. This can be done by loosening the set screw with a wrench while holding the winding bar. You will feel tension adjusting as you loosen the screws.
Turn the first winding bar a quarter turn as you place the second winding bar in the hole. Next, tighten the screw.
Remove the winding bar and repeat the process on the same side. It may take several attempts of trial and error to balance properly.
Always adjust the springs with the utmost care. These springs are under an incredible amount of tension and can cause serious bodily injury if they should snap.
