A Guide to Weighing Your Garage Door

One frequently asked question we hear from our customers in Rancho Cordova, California is how do you properly weigh a garage door? This can be especially helpful if you wish to convert from extension to torsion garage door springs.

First start by unwinding your garage door springs to remove any tension from the torsion cables. Basically, you backline the springs. Before unwinding the spring, check to make sure the cables are somewhat loose.

Once the door is free, place a scale under the door. A simple household bathroom scale should do the trick unless your door is considerably heavy, like an overhead commercial garage door or an oversized residential garage door.

Gently lower the door onto the scale. Then you should be able to get an accurate weight reading of your garage door.

Be Careful! Not Sure? Hire a Professional!

It sounds easy, but to properly unwind your springs, you’ll need to know what you’re doing. These springs can be under tremendous pressure and can cause serious injury. If you aren’t completely confident of doing this garage door repair by yourself, you should hire a professional garage door repair company.

We’d be happy to come out and measure the weight of your door. We can even help you convert your garage door springs from torsion to extension and vice-versa.
